Collaboration

UCL Student Union x Screen Share

Partnering with the UCL Student Union, we created upcycled laptop cases for both Screen Share, the leading digital inclusion charity for refugees in the UK. Students participated in a social impact workshop led by FibreLab, where they learned a new skill while simultaneously giving back to the community. The finished laptop cases were then distributed to Screen Share to be auctioned off at the OOX Summer Party, helping the charity to continue providing digital access, skills and connectivity for refugees.

The UCL students came to FibreLab to use a sewing machine for the first time. With our design expertise, FibreLab guided the students, following a pattern created by Ana Westhead. The result is a unique, padded laptop case, hand-crafted in our East London studio and made from Damson Madder’s production waste.

Looking behind the screen of our upcycling workshop, UCLs students began dissembling for reuse. Our mentor and founder Kae, guided students on how to follow the pattern, finding suitable pieces for upcycling.

Sponsored by UCL Student Union, Screen Share earns the proceeds of this project to increase the digital inclusion and literacy of refugees in the UK.

For many students, this is their first sewing experience. FibreLab guided them through the creative and technical process of upcycling.
